Working With Osteoporosis Treatment And Prevention

A Program Designed To Improve Bone Density And Reduce The Risk Of Falls.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease characterized by a low bone mass and deterioration of the bone tissue. It is a debilitating condition that causes bone to thin and weaken, leaving you susceptible to fractures. The most common fractures associated with osteoporosis include the hip, spine and wrist. Osteoporosis doesn't develop over night. You can loose bone mass steadily for several years without experiencing any symptoms until a fracture occurs. Early detection and assessing your risk factors is very important so that you may take prevention. There is no single cause for Osteoporosis but there are "Risk Factors" that seem to play a role in the development of the disease.

Determining your risk factors with your family physician and physiotherapist will aid in your prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

Studies indicate that weight bearing exercises, combined with a diet high in calcium and vitamin D and if necessary medication are successful in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis.

Early diagnosis starting with screening at the age of 40 for women and 50 for men can catch osteoporosis before the first fracture. Pre first fracture intervention holds the best potential for preventing disability. Over the last twenty years evidence for the treatment has been mounding and invovles four components.

Education, diet, exercise, and if needed, medication. All too often pre-osteoporosis high risk individuals are not identified and should be started on education, diet and exercises for prevention.

Our Program

Clients will undergo a detailed physical assessment by both our registered Physiotherapist and certified Kinesiologist. Both are trained in the assessment and treatment of osteoporosis. The assessment will determine the clients exercise ability, risk level for fractures as well as their balance and agility. An individualized program will be developed for each client and involves the following:

  • Supervised Posture, balance, mobility and weight bearing exercises
  • Education re Osteoporosis
  • Education re Activities of Daily Living
  • Cardiovascular
  • Access to the *melioguide website
  • Goal Setting

Our program takes place over 12 weeks and the client usually attends once per week for supervision and progression of exercises. The client will attend more often if he/she requires pain management.

Upon completion of the program, the clients are reassessed and results compared to the initial evaluation to determine if goals were met and if the client ready to move onto the next level.
